Vegan GLP-1 Recipes

39 fully plant-based recipes, chosen for how much protein they carry rather than how virtuous they sound. Protein and calories are on every card.

Plant-based cooking on a small appetite

Cooking vegan is mostly a question of what you build on. Lean on veg and you get a lovely plate of food with very little protein in it. Lean on tofu, tempeh, lentils and beans and the numbers look completely different, without the cooking getting any harder.

Tofu is the one most people give up on too early. Press it properly, cube it, toss it in a spoon of cornflour and let it sit undisturbed in a hot pan until it releases on its own. You get a genuinely crisp edge and a soft middle, and 400g of firm tofu carries about 60g of protein. Tempeh is even easier: crumble it, brown it, and treat it like mince.

Plenty of the dishes here are vegan without making a thing of it. Koshari, rice and peas, a chickpea burger, black bean tacos. They're just dinner, and they happen to have no animal products in them.

Common questions

Can you get enough protein on a vegan diet on GLP-1 medication?
Yes, as long as the protein is the thing you build the meal round rather than an afterthought. Firm tofu, tempeh, seitan, lentils, chickpeas, black beans and edamame all carry real amounts. The recipes here run from 20g to the high thirties a serving, and each card says which.
What is the highest-protein vegan ingredient?
Seitan is the densest, then tempeh, then firm or extra-firm tofu. Among the pulses, lentils and edamame are the strongest. Silken tofu is lovely but much lighter than the firm stuff, so it suits sauces and puddings more than the centre of a meal.
How do I make tofu that is not disappointing?
Buy firm or extra firm, press out the water for at least twenty minutes, cut it into cubes, and toss it in cornflour before it goes anywhere near the pan. Then leave it alone. Tofu sticks when it is wet and when you keep moving it, and it will let go of the pan by itself once the crust forms.
Are these recipes vegan-checked?
Every recipe on this page has been scanned ingredient by ingredient for animal products, including the ones that hide in stock, Worcestershire sauce and honey. Anything we could not be certain about was left off rather than guessed at.
